Gadgets: Being the Caveman with the Biggest Club

4

There is no doubt that technology has a hold on us like never before. When a new smart phone comes out, I feel like a dog watching a chicken rotisserie, I am following it with my eyes. I want it, I need it, I have to have it! Sometimes people tell me that he or she will wait six months until the latest technology is cheaper and I think to myself, “No, no, no, how can they wait? Don’t they need to know now?” The answer is no; technology just makes us think we do.

Tech and the Shy

It’s been said that our society favors extraverts in almost all aspects. If that statement is true, has technology leveled the playing field?

Experiencing my formative years in a time where the world was becoming rapidly saturated with technology, I have seen ideas about technology dramatically shift. In my middle-school years, I often toyed around on our family computer, exploring the possibilities of the Internet and sharing content on the world wide web by creating websites. The Los Angeles Chinatown that should be filled with the hustle and bustle of a usual Chinatown is practically empty after dark. As more and more businesses close down early because of the lack of customers, the number of visitors has also been declining, especially at night. The popularity of Chinatown has been steadily declining ever since the 80’s and 90’s, when the town became stigmatized for its increased crime rate.

Can't Depart, Can Travel

The volcano eruption in Iceland has created a tremendous human frenzy in addition to its natural chaos of lava and ashes. One of its biggest impacts is on the airline sector, which has cancelled all the flights from and to Europe because of the ash. The situation is costing the airlines conservatively $200 million a day, while people at the airport are either camping out at the terminals on meager cots or trying to find other modes of transportation. In the age where global travel is necessary for many jobs, the inability to fly is wreaking a massive havoc all over the world.
