Introverts, You’ve Got it Goin’ On
Submitted by Grace on Tue, 01/19/2010 - 13:30I have recently published a blog post about being an introvert and thought that this week’s Sorbate topic on stereotypes would be the perfect opportunity to spread the good word about us introverts. If you haven’t noticed, the United States is a very extroverted society. As a minority, introverts encounter a lot of misconceptions especially in the workplace.
The Middle School Diaries: If I was President for a day…

"This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in." -Theodore Roosevelt
Imagine if you were the United States President for a day, what would you do with all that power? I was curious to know how the students would respond to this prompt, but it wouldn’t be that easy to get responses from middle school students from South Central LA.
The Jersey-Whoops, Graduate School Blues

I’m going to admit something. I almost wrote a blog about The Jersey Shore. Alas, having just pressed the submit button and released my graduate-school applications into the stratosphere, I feel I must commemorate this moment somehow (I still love you Ronnie!- The Indiscretion [courtesy of the Jersey Shore nickname generator]). I want to talk about the application process a little bit, which is one part fear, six parts frustration, five parts procrastination sprinkled with willpower and ingenuity, and entirely fueled by sheer stupefaction about what is really expected of you.

“I know I can
Be what I wanna be
If I work hard at it
I’ll be where I wanna be”
-Nas, I Can
One of the biggest challenges I had as a substitute teacher was keeping the students engaged. How in the world was I supposed to teach about events and people that existed way before their time when all that interested most of them were pop icons such as Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Taylor Lautner, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown? Yes, despite Chris Brown’s assault on Rihanna, he’s still very popular with the middle school girls. (Check out Elina's blog if you have time.)
The Middle School Diaries: So it begins…

"It's the City of Angels and constant danger South Central LA, can't get no stranger..."
-Tupac Shakur, To Live and Die in LA
The first thing I was thinking in my mind as I was driving at 5 in the morning from Orange County to Los Angeles was: “What in the world did I get myself into?!”
I got to school so early that the gates were closed and no one was there. The sun wasn’t even out yet! I stayed in my car and observed the houses around me. All the windows had bars on them, I saw two black cats cross the street in a matter of 5 minutes, and the same guy in a yellow puff jacket circled the block twice already. I made sure my doors were locked. I definitely wasn’t in Orange County anymore.
