Tech and the Shy

4.5

It’s been said that our society favors extraverts in almost all aspects. If that statement is true, has technology leveled the playing field?

Experiencing my formative years in a time where the world was becoming rapidly saturated with technology, I have seen ideas about technology dramatically shift. In my middle-school years, I often toyed around on our family computer, exploring the possibilities of the Internet and sharing content on the world wide web by creating websites. It may seem difficult to believe that not so long ago, using the Internet to share information and content was exclusively relegated to nerds and geeks.

Confessions of Plugged-In Person

4.5

Since acquiring my BlackBerry last year (in addition to my iPhone) I now check email before I sleep, once I wake up, and if I happen to wake up in the middle of the night. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve only written two sentences of this blog and already I have taken a quick 10 second break… to check my CrackBerry. Where has my focus gone? Until reading the NYTimes article ‘Hooked on Gadgets, and Paying a Mental Price’ I thought I was doing great as a multi-tasker. Now, I’m beginning to wonder if being plugged in is degrading my quality of life.

Lady Gaga: The Voice of the Sexual Generation

4

Just another week, just another Lady Gaga video, right? Even if you are not a fan of the most famous artist in the world right now (artist, not singer- though she'd probably give Justin a run for his money on the latter as well), you still need to give her props for production value. Every successive video she has released has been more over the top and revolutionary than all the previous ones combined; thus, this week's pop culture metamorphosis is brought to you by the release of the video for her latest single, Alejandro. You know, the one with the Spanish influenced beat about the love she just can't let go of, no matter how hard she tries. A feeling that I can empathize with because of how often this song has been stuck in my head since it came out last November with the release of Gaga's remastered The Fame Monster.

No Longer a Smelly Bride

I have always thought that the stereotypical bride is the May bride. That is, until I was left utterly confused after learning that the popular phrase is the “June bride” and not the “May bride.” May, which is the peak month of spring, seems like the most appropriate month for a lovely, outdoor wedding in the springtime. The newly bloomed flowers during spring not only complement all the soft and flowery sweetness of weddings, but the meaning of new birth mirrors the beginning of the newlywed’s life. But, June? June is too obscure; it simply signals the beginning of summer. So, what is the origin of this awkward “June bride?”
