In An Unlikely Match-Up, Everybody Wins

The past decade has seen a plethora of pitfalls and victories for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender community. In the past few months alone, this country has seen controversies over homosexuality and prom, changes in the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military arrangement, and a continuous fight for federally recognized same-sex unions. One realm that often appears untouched by the social happenings of the LGBT community, though, is the sports world.

The Odd Girl Out on the Field

With the beginning of the World Cup last week, the ongoing U.S. Open in golf, and last night's Game 7 of the NBA Finals, it is a big time for the sports world. Lots of the bars around my house are opening up extra early to make sure they show all of the World Cup games and have been staying open extra late to accommodate the abnormally large Tuesday crowds who show up to cheer for the Celts. It's difficult not to get swept up in the excitement, but it is equally as hard to be taken seriously as a sports fan as a girl. Especially in a town like Boston.

Take Me Out to the Sox Game!

I grew up in New England- which means I grew up a Red Sox fan. For those of you from outside of the Northeast it would be difficult for words to ever express exactly what that statement meant in my youth. Although I fortunately only had to live through seventeen years of The Curse, it was still no way to spend one's childhood.

This past weekend I went to a friend’s house to celebrate her birthday. As the party wore on and we began to reminisce, we stumbled upon the well worn topic of our high-school cross-country escapades: Our coach’s motivating aphorisms, the rain-soaked race that turned our course into a mud bath, a shared hatred of a training exercise called “accelerations.” As we talked we realized that we both, and most of the girls we ran cross-country with, still run on a regular basis. “It seems like everybody’s taking up running these days,” she said. I had to agree – even my brother who his entire life has hated the sport decided to train for a half-marathon this summer. We came to the conclusion that running must be the new yoga.

Olympians Just Like You And Me

Is it me or did the 2008 Summer Olympics seem more… hyped-up? This was one of the questions which was discussed during a lunch time conversation last weekend. To some, the opening ceremonies and media coverage of the events in the 2010 Winter Olympics felt underwhelming. Someone from the lunch conversation offered up a couple of possible reasons why. The first argued that those who participated in the winter games were a smaller subset of the affluent who could afford the expensive gear and access to snow and ice; that these games really only targeted that demographic. The second argument complimented the first, stating that the sporting events in the Winter Olympics were not relatable to the general public. Although I could see some validity in that person’s reasoning, a quick glimpse into the women’s figure skating event these past few days proves them wrong.
